The term spas is thrown about very easily throughout this and many other sites on the web. But exactly what is a spa, and how do we distinguish between different types of spas and other treatment centers?
According to an on-line dictionary, a spa is:
- A mineral spring considered to have health-giving properties;
- A place or resort with such a spring;
- A commercial establishment offering health and beauty treatment through such means as steam baths, exercise equipment, and massage; or
- A bath or small pool containing hot aerated water
Traditionally, the word spa refers to hot mineral water bubbling out of the ground. There are very few of these natural springs in South Africa, but the beneficial properties of these waters inspired many health and relaxation treatments offered at numerous day- and overnight facilities.
Today, the word ‘spa’ in general refers to an establishment that offer massage as well as water(hydro-) treatments. Facial, nail and other beauty treatments may or may not be on offer.
